Nigeria’s northern minority ethnic groups propose a reorganisation

Posted by

A group of northern minority ethnic nations, representing the Coalition of Indigenous Middle Belt Organisations (CIMBO), have proposed the division of Nigeria into three regions: South, Middle-Belt, and North.

Furthermore, the ethnic nationalities insisted on the revision of the existing 1999 constitution, asserting that the implementation of a new ‘people’s constitution’ is the solution to achieve peace and progress in Nigeria.

A communiqué released following the two-day conference in Kaduna proposed that the 2014 national conference report should serve as the foundation for the reorganisation of the country.

In his presentation at the conference entitled “The position of the Middle Belt on Restructuring, Boundary Adjustments and Constitutional Review,” Professor Ejeikwu Emmanuel Oloja advocated for the division of Nigeria into three regions: South, Middle-Belt, and Northern.

He argues that a reorganized Nigeria, consisting of several autonomous entities, would result in genuine federalism, decreased corruption, and less dependence on statutory allocations from the central government. He believes that this would exacerbate the competition for resource control.

A joint communiqué by the chairman and secretary, Timothy Barau Gandu and Prof. Emmanuel Ejeikwu, emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to undergo restructuring. This urgency is mostly driven by the substantial increase and diversity in the ethnic makeup of the Middle Belt, which is projected to have a population of 44 million as of June 2024.
