The Abia State Legislative Assembly has rejected three commissioner nominees whose credentials are lacking

Yesterday, in the session of the Abia State House of Assembly, there was a small drama because three of the six commissioner nominees that Abia Governor Alex Otti had forwarded for confirmation did not show up with the necessary credentials.

Rep. Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jr. of the Obingwa-West state constituency had already voiced his disapproval of commissioner nominees showing up for screening without full credentials, prompting this action.

“Going through their documents here with us, there is no single paper to back up their claims in their Curriculum Vitae,” he said, referring to the lack of supporting documents such as the First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC), West African Secondary School Certificate (WASSC), tax clearance certificate, birth certificate, or age declaration, among others.

In order to stop it from happening again, he asked the House to investigate the anomaly thoroughly.

In response, Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa stated that one of the nominees for the position of commissioner was unable to attend the screening due to distance, and he promised that the remaining nominees will be confirmed when they offered their credentials to the House in the upcoming session.

Only two of the governor’s nominations for commissioner—Ubochi Goodluck Chinedu and Ogbonnaya Uche—were confirmed following screening by the Abia State House of Assembly.

Once the other nominees sent in their credentials to the House clerk, their confirmation may be postponed.

Following its third reading and examination of the report from its Joint Committee on Agriculture, Trade, Commerce and Industry, the House also passed HAB 10, the Abia State Cocoa Development and Other Commodities and Marketing Board Bill, 2024.

The House plenary was subsequently adjourned until Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
