Faculty Entrance Scholarships and Faculty Scholarships are the two types of undergraduate scholarships that faculties give.
Universities select scholarship awardees based on a variety of standards and procedures. The admission scholarship’s potential worth is indicated in the relevant faculty section below.
There are a finite number of awards. Awards are given based on the following criteria. For these awards, there is no application procedure.
Awards are given out by faculties based on data from admissions applications and previous year’s academic performance.
On the basis of NSC performance in open and redress pools, students are given Faculty Entrance Scholarships. Redress for Faculty Entrance Scholarships is based on an applicant’s disadvantage.
Returning students are given faculty scholarships based on their academic performance in open and remedial pools. Redress in the case of Faculty Scholarships is based on self-declared racial identity.
The record of the award will be included on the applicant’s or student’s transcript, but the amount paid into the fee account will be a prorated proportion of the usual award.
General requirements for faculty entrance scholarships
The first year of academic study is covered by Faculty Entrance Scholarships, which are available to undergraduate applicants who are applying to the university for the first time.
Faculty Entrance Scholarships are guaranteed to applicants who meet the announced faculty threshold levels, with the exception of the BAS and the Performing and Creative Arts, where audition and portfolio rankings are taken into account.
Only South African nationals and legal permanent residents are eligible for Faculty Entrance Scholarships.

Scholarships for faculty entrance are only good for the year in which they are offered. For the year they register, applicants who are delaying their studies must satisfy the declared threshold level. Applicants who take a “Gap year” may have their entrance scholarship offer renewed by the faculty.
The dean may choose to use a small percentage of the faculty’s designated funds for Faculty Entrance Scholarships, which are set aside, for awards to candidates with international school-leaving credentials.
General requirements for faculty scholarships
Students in their second or third year of undergraduate studies are eligible for faculty scholarships. (Some Faculties also provide awards for next academic years.) The duration of faculty scholarships is one year.
A candidate must be registered for the entire curriculum workload for the designated program/qualification in order to be eligible for a faculty scholarship, and he or she cannot have failed a course in the program for which they are registered.
A candidate’s academic record, circumstances, and the advice of selection panels and heads of academic departments, as appropriate, will all be taken into consideration by the deans when awarding scholarships, even though minimum standards of academic achievement as defined by each faculty and for academic programs as specified will apply.
Faculty scholarships may be withdrawn from beneficiaries who don’t enroll in classes at the university during the scholarship year, switch their program to another faculty, or terminate their academic registration before mid-year exams (recipients who cancel registration after writing the mid-year exams will receive half the scholarship value).
The minimum required Faculty Points Score (FPS) and subject score for the 2023 Faculty Entrance Scholarship are as follows:
- Department of Commerce:
- The admission scholarship is worth R20,000.
- Engineering Department and Built Environment
Based on the candidates’ final Faculty Point Scores, the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment grants Faculty Entrance Scholarships to South African citizens, permanent residents, and international applicants taking the South African NSC (FPS). Candidates for the Bachelor of Architectural Studies are not included in these (BAS).
In all programs save the Bachelor of Architectural Studies, entrance scholarships will be given to 20% of male students and 80% of women and transgender applicants (BAS).
Ten entrance scholarships for the Bachelor of Architectural Studies will be given out in a competition (BAS).
Each entrance scholarship will be worth R60,000.
Health Sciences Faculty
Eligible applicant for University of Cape Town Programmes and Scholarships
The amount of qualified applicants and the faculty budget allotment determine how many scholarships are given out.
Taking into account the anticipated enrollment for each FHS program, a prorated amount of scholarships are offered.
The Dean has the ability to choose deserving candidates for additional discretionary prizes, including those taking non-NSC school exams.
We will grant 22 admission scholarships in 2023, each worth R40,000.

This category of faculty admission scholarships recognizes and rewards outstanding performance on the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams. Ten percent of the scholarships in this category will be given to first-time candidates in a competitive process based on academic merit. On the advice of the program coordinator and the faculty admissions committee, the dean grants awards (RFAC).
Degree programs in the performing and visual arts
This category of faculty admission grants recognizes and rewards distinction in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam and in creative or performance endeavors.
Pro rata among the three sectors, the scholarships are allocated, and at least half of the prizes must go to Redress category candidates. On the recommendation of a selection panel, awards are given to candidates by the Head/Director of the Department/School.
Awards are given to applicants who are transferring or enrolling for the first time and who have been determined by the school, department, or institution to have high potential. If a student later registers for a degree outside of one of the performing and creative arts degree programs, the scholarship will no longer be offered.
Fine art bachelor’s degree (BA(FA))
An applicant’s portfolio rating determines whether they will be given consideration for a faculty entrance scholarship.
Awards are given to the top candidates in descending order, with portfolios receiving grades of A, B+, or B. The NSC and NBT scores of two applicants are taken into consideration when their performance in a portfolio submission is comparable.
Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Performance (BA(TP)); Dance Education Diploma in Theatre and Performance
Candidates for the degree and diploma programs are evaluated for a Faculty admission scholarship based on their performance at the audition, their NSC results, and their NBT score (all three of which are equally weighted).
Equity (particularly with regard to the Redress category) and achieving a suitable balance between the various streams and specializations in the degree program are also taken into account when awarding scholarships.
Advanced Diploma in Opera: Bachelor of Music (BMus); Diploma in Music Performance; and Bachelor of Music
Candidates are evaluated for a faculty admission scholarship based on the musical skill demonstrated during the audition. Candidates are ranked, auditions are given an A, B+, or B grade, and rewards are given to the best candidates in descending order. When two candidates perform similarly in an audition performance, their NSC and NBT scores, as well as any recommendations from the music teacher, are taken into consideration.
